About Theras
Theras was founded by Psychotherapist Aaron Hanway and Developer Thomas Sleeman. We built Theras to give UK and EU psychology professionals access to AI tools that are purpose-built and GDPR-compliant.

In private practice in Wicklow, Ireland.
Hi, I’m Aaron. I’m a practising psychotherapist and co-founder of Theras. I run a busy private practice, Wicklow Counselling and Psychology, with dual qualifications in both Psychology and Psychotherapy. I am passionate about my work and always looking for ways to refine my practice to improve the service I provide.
Like most of us, a while back I became curious about AI, first using it for note-taking and research. But despite its benefits, I learned about issues that made its use in a therapy practice worrying: data privacy concerns, hallucinations, over-validation, and simulated empathic messaging. This is how I came to co-found Theras: an AI platform that allows us to gain the benefits while controlling the risks.
Today, I use Theras across most of my own caseload. Using it daily in my work allows me to continually refine it as Clinical Lead to make the platform safe, accurate, and genuinely useful for working clinicians. Using Theras has improved my practice significantly. The audio scribe allows me to be fully present with my clients, knowing session details are captured effortlessly, while the reflective chat helps me work through complex clinical questions when preparing for sessions.
Beyond my practice, I’m committed to helping our profession navigate this technology responsibly. We cannot let AI become the new social media, where regulation lagged by a decade. I recently participated in an EFPA research focus group to explore how AI can be integrated into psychological services while strictly controlling for risk.
For me, the boundary has always been simple: therapy must always remain human-led. Theras exists to aid the work so we can bring a settled, focused mind to the people in our care.

Engineering and data protection
I build and run the platform and I am responsible for where your data lives, who can reach it, and what happens to it when you delete it.
The architecture was decided by one constraint: session content is special category health data, so nothing about it leaves UK and EU jurisdiction.
Why we built it
Documentation is the part of the work that follows you home.
There are tools that can help, but the problem is where they send the work. What you dictate after a session is special category health data under Article 9 of the UK GDPR and the GDPR. Most AI tools route your content through US infrastructure and reserve the right to use it to improve their models.
Furthermore, a general-purpose AI trained on general internet content does not know what a formulation is for, what a risk assessment has to record, or why a therapist registered with one body in one jurisdiction is held to something different from another. With Theras, that knowledge is central to the design of the platform.
